Executive summary. Using an H-2 blocker instead of diphenhydramine (Benadryl) for treatment of allergic reactions avoids the adverse effects of severe drowsiness and loss of mental acuity. Epinephrine is still required for anaphylactic reactions.

Anaphylaxis is one of the few true medical emergencies that is rapidly fatal but also can be completely remedied if treated immediately. Treatment is also relatively simple, though many patients die because bystanders without medical experience fear the step involving injection of epinephrine. This fact must be remembered. Overcoming the fear of administering an injection is well worth saving a life.

Anaphylaxis is the medical term used for the most severe of allergic reactions. Most cases of anaphylaxis occur within 30 minutes after an insect sting and 2 hours after ingestion of specific foods or medications, also called allergens. The most common allergens causing anaphylaxis are insect stings (bees, wasps, yellow jackets, and similar species), peanuts, tree nuts (walnuts, pecans, and others), seafood, and the antibiotic penicillin.

Following exposure to a potential allergen, anaphylaxis can be distinguished from other forms of allergic reactions by the following features:
